    After School Journalism Program

    Youth Journalism

The After School Youth Journalism Program will teach students how to define journalism and reach a target audience through enriched reading and writing. As a group, we will discuss the different types of journalism and what makes a story newsworthy. Additionally, students will learn both the role of journalism and their roles as journalists in their local community.

Youth Journalists will learn how and why certain stories become news and how they impact readers. Additionally, you will learn how to write in a way that evokes emotion. Students will use facts to help readers understand situations and circumstances around them.

Students will use news judgment to write stories they believe will impact their school and community.

    What Youth Journalists Will Learn:

    • Discuss elements of a good news story.
    • Develop critical thinking skills.
    • Define, understand, and give examples of a target audience for a news story.
    • Define and recognize bias and its role in journalism.
    • Discuss the use of opinion in news writing.
    • Explain the role tone plays in a news story.
    • Learn how to analyze a news story.
    • Practical assignments at the end of every session.
    • A valuable learning experience with live project work and examples.
